This week marks 44 years since the premiere of the sitcom that brought Dame Judi Dench to national attention in the UK. A Fine Romance premiered on the first of November in 1981, and it follows two socially awkward adults, Laura and Mike, as they progress from strangers to romantic partners (with plenty of bad luck along the way).

Dench starred opposite her real-life husband, Michael Williams, and though the series feels a bit dated in some ways, it’s still a delight to watch. It was nominated for ten different BAFTA awards, including 4 nominations for best comedy series - and it won twice for Dench’s portrayal of Laura.

What we’re…

  • Watching: The Duke - Jim Broadbent and Dame Helen Mirren star in this 2021 film about the 1961 theft of Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. The link points to the Amazon rental page, but if you have Hulu you can also watch it there. It starts off a little slow, but it’s great fun once it gets going.

  • Reading: Death Under a Little Sky by Stig Abell - I spotted this on Kindle Unlimited (Amazon’s all-you-can-read subscription), and I’m excited to have two more in the series to read after this. The series begins when detective Jake Jackson inherits a reclusive uncle’s country home, which prompts him to leave London - but as it’s a crime series, it’s not long before murder finds him in his quiet new village.

  • On HBO Max, Season 2 of Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking premiered on November 2nd.

  • On AMC+, the Graham Norton Show continues with new episodes on Thursdays.

  • Over on Apple TV+, all episodes of Season 5 of Slow Horses are now available. Another Mick Herron adaptation, Down Cemetery Road, premiered on the 29th with two episodes (additional episodes on Wednesdays through December 10th). Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson star in this Oxford-area thriller.

I don't like obscene telephone calls, so I'm going to hang up now, because if I go on any longer this is going to become one.
