First off, a quick note - if you happen to be near Makanda, Illinois this weekend (about 10 miles south of Carbondale in Southern IL), you can meet two of our Facebook group moderators at the Vulture Festival on October 18th and 19th. The town is cute, and the festival is a celebration of food, art, music… and the local vultures.

My parents - Charles & Jo Hutson - will have a stand there selling books and art, so don’t hesitate to stop and say hello if you have the chance. You can tell them Stefanie sent you 🙂

What we’re…

  • Watching: Gatherings - This docuseries is unfortunately not included with any of the subscription services, but the whole collection is not much more than a typical movie ticket - and it supports an independent producer. Over the course of six episodes, it looks at some of the strange, wonderful, and occasionally creepy folk traditions of Great Britain - including the Burry Man in Scotland and the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance.

  • Reading: Sugar & Spite by MC Beaton with RW Green - Shortly before MC Beaton passed away, she passed the torch to her dear friend Rod Green, and they finished a book together before he took over entirely. Though the first couple were a bit rough, Green has continued to get better - and so far, I’m enjoying this fun, light Agatha Raisin mystery about deaths within a Cotswolds birding community (especially since Sir Charles Fraith is trying to get close to Agatha again).

THIS WEEK IN BRITISH TV

  • On BritBox, the third and final episode of season 2 of Karen Pirie will air on the 16th. On the 10th, they added season 1 of the Victorian period crime drama Ripper Street (2 and 3 follow on the 17th and 24th). Today on the 14th, season 3 of Beyond Paradise premiered (episodes weekly, six in total).

  • On Acorn TV, new episodes of Murder Before Evensong and Summertide continue on Mondays. The Crow Girl aired its finale on the 13th (with season 2 now confirmed), and that same day also brought three classic Agatha Christie adaptations: Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? (1980), Sparkling Cyanide (2003), and Seven Dials Mystery (1981).

  • On Netflix, they added Victoria Beckham on the 9th. Perhaps not surprisingly, this is a docuseries about former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. On October 10th, they added the Ruth Ware adaptation The Woman in Cabin 10, which stars Keira Knightley as a journalist who believes she saw someone thrown overboard on a luxury yacht - only to be told she couldn’t have possibly seen such a thing. On the 16th, they’ll be adding season 3 of The Diplomat.

  • On PBS and PBS Masterpiece, episodes of the new Maigret adaptation continue on Sundays. The historical drama Brian & Maggie now has both episodes available to stream.

  • On AMC+, the Graham Norton Show continues with new episodes on Thursdays.

  • On Hulu, season 2 of the dark Irish comedy Obituary premieres today, October 14th.

Be reasonable, why would I try to kill myself? I'm rich and I'm Scottish, it doesn't get better than that.
