Those of you who’ve been reading our newsletter for a while will know that when BritishTV.com started to grow, my fiance David took on some of the behind-the-scenes work. It’s mostly boring but essential things like making sure the site stays up and the forms work as they should.

If you’re a true crime fan, though, you might also be interested to know that in his free time, he helps out with a nonprofit called the Lydia Lerma Foundation - an organization that’s become the subject of a recent BBC podcast series.

The organisation was created when Lydia used social media to track down and bring her son’s abuser to justice after he fled the country to Mexico - and though they have a variety of initiatives, using social media for justice is a big part of what they do.

The podcast follows Lydia’s own high-stakes international manhunt - how she didn’t just wait around for the authorities to act; she risked her own safety to get justice.

If that sounds like something you’d enjoy listening to, you can CLICK HERE to read more and get links to the various places you can listen to it.

What we’re…

  • Watching: Karen Pirie, Season 2 - I waited for all three episodes of the new season to be available before starting, and it’s a good thing I did. The new season of this Scottish mystery deals with a cold case involving a kidnapped heiress, and it’s hard to step away from it once you get started.

  • Reading: When Gavin Met Stacey & Everything In Between: A Story of Love & Friendship - Ruth Jones and James Corden first worked together on a lovely Kay Mellor show called Fat Friends back in the early 2000s - and together, they would go on to write one of the most watched sitcoms in British TV history. This book is like sitting in on a conversation between the two of them, and if you’re a fan, it’s a must-read. The audio version (with Corden and Jones) is fantastic, but if you buy it, be sure to go to your Audible library and download the PDF file with all the bonus photos and scripts or you won’t get the full value.

WEEKEND WATCH SUGGESTIONS

Looking for something interesting to watch this weekend? Here are some shows and films you might have missed…

  • A Thousand Kisses Deep - After an elderly neighbor’s apparent suicide, a London nurse (Jodie Whittaker) slips back through time to revisit her bond with a jazz-club owner (Dougray Scott), with Emilia Fox and David Warner co-starring. (Also on Tubi, Pluto, and Plex)

  • When We Go to War - This one’s actually not British, but if you enjoy period shows about the real life impacts of war, you may enjoy it. Set at the outbreak of WWI, this six-part New Zealand drama follows a middle-class family—and Māori siblings—from the home front to the Gallipoli and Egypt campaigns, starring Antonia Prebble, Ido Drent, and Alexander Tarrant.

  • The Last Rifleman - Pierce Brosnan plays a WWII veteran who slips out of his Northern Ireland care home to reach Normandy for the 75th D-Day commemoration and face his past. (Also on Tubi and Pluto)

  • La Cha Cha - On a road trip to scatter his grandfather’s ashes, an Irish traveler discovers a quirky off-grid retiree community in a Welsh caravan park fighting to stay alive—featuring Dougray Scott, Rhys Ifans, and Alfie Allen. (Also on Tubi and Pluto)

  • Inside Royal Kensington & Chelsea - If you have enjoyed The Chelsea Detective, you might also like this docu-series about the area it’s filmed and set. It’s one of the poshest parts of the UK, and it’s deeply connected to the royals.

  • Peep Show - This early-2000s series is a British comedy classic in which David Mitchell and Stephen Webb play two different but equally dysfunctional roommates. It’s also widely considered to be Olivia Colman’s breakthrough role. (Also on Tubi, Pluto, Hulu, Fawesome, and BritBox)

  • Alex Rider - From Anthony Horowitz (Foyle’s War, Magpie Murders): a London teen is covertly recruited by a secret MI6 unit for high-risk missions, starring Otto Farrant with Vicky McClure and Stephen Dillane. Don’t let the teen protagonist scare you off—it’s meaty enough for adults to enjoy, too.
