First off, a bit of British TV news:
The BBC has put out a trailer for season 2 of Ludwig, which premieres later this month in the UK (August 20th). There’s still no US premiere date, but it’s expected sometime this year. The mystery stars David Mitchell as John Taylor, a reclusive puzzle setter also known as Ludwig. When his police detective twin went missing (in season 1), he went undercover as his brother in an attempt to learn more.
Call the Midwife has released a couple photos and some casting details for the upcoming WW2-based prequel. You can read more about the upcoming production (and see the images) HERE. The production is expected to air at Christmas, though US specifics haven’t yet been announced. Hopefully, we’ll know more on that one soon.
The new Monarch of the Glen TV series has released first-look images and casting details - including Phyllis Logan in the role of Morag. It will ultimately premiere on PBS Masterpiece in the US, but all we know about the date is that it will be in 2027.

Watching: Palmer - This 1991 TV movie stars Ray Winstone as a small-time PI in Brighton with an odd set of employees and not a whole lot of skill at what he does. It’s relatively short (1h 18m), but it’s a fun watch and it’s kind of a shame it didn’t turn into a longer series. Barry Jackson (Midsomer Murders) also appears as Donald. You can also find this one free on Tubi or Fawesome.
Reading: The Killer’s Mark by MW Craven - There are a few British crime series where I buy the latest entries immediately upon release, and MW Craven’s Washington Poe series is one of them. Set in Northern England, they follow a detective and his brilliant, autistic-coded sidekick Tilly as they solve all sorts of demented crimes. They’re fairly dark and gritty, but with great recurring characters that offer a bit of lightness. At the moment, only the audiobook format of the latest book is available in the US, but if you’re new to the series you’ll likely want to start with The Puppet Show anyway.

THIS WEEK IN BRITISH TV
On BritBox, new episodes of Escape to the Country continue at a rate of four new episodes every Friday through September 25th. On the 10th, they added a new season of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, on the 13th they added Prey, starring John Simm as a police officer on the run, trying to prove his innocence. On the 18th, they’ll add the 2018 adaptation of Vanity Fair.
On Acorn TV, August 17th brings us new episodes of Summertide, The Ridge, and season 4 of The Chelsea Detective. They’ll also be adding the 2016 film The Watchman on the 17th, in which Stephen Graham stars as a CCTV operator who gets into a bit of trouble when he takes matters into his own hands.
PBS Passport and PBS Masterpiece subscribers gained access to season 5 of Professor T on Sunday the 9th.
On BBC Select (+ BritBox Premier), the 13th brought A Tale of Two Britains, The Wonderful World of Blood, and The Tech Billionaire Takeover. On the 15th, they added Inside the Rage Machine (about social media algorithms), and on the 20th they’ll be adding Battle of the Atlantic: The U-Boat War, Queen Victoria’s Men, and season 49 of Antiques Roadshow.
