If you’ve been eagerly awaiting the new season of Ted Lasso (4), your wait is almost over - it premieres on Apple TV+ on August 5th. Slow Horses, another Apple TV+ favorite with strong British connections (cast, author, and setting are all British) will be close behind it, with season 6 premiering September 16th.

We’re just a news site, covering British TV news for American audiences. We’ve been getting a lot of irate emails about BritBox’s Premier option, but we have no control over that. We know it’s irritating to have to pay $40 more per year to get certain shows earlier (assuming you don’t find any value in the BBC Select shows you also get with it). We know virtually every streaming service has been increasing prices at a rate that outpaces any sort of normal inflation rate. It sucks, and we sympathize - but we don’t have any more control over it than any of you do. Your feedback will go a lot further if you send it to the streaming networks instead of us.
If you’re finding it hard to justify the costs of so many streaming services, we recommend checking out free-with-ads services like Tubi, Roku Channel, Crackle, Fawesome, and Pluto TV. Many local libraries have great streaming options via Hoopla or Kanopy (and of course, DVDs are often available).

Watching: Miranda - No, not the quirky, delightful British comedy starring Miranda Hart - but a 2002 film starring American Christina Ricci alongside British actor John Simm (Grace, Life on Mars). Simm plays a librarian who falls in love with a mysterious American dancer - only for her to disappear. He heads to London to track her down, only to find she has a variety of identities. It’s an odd film, but it also features appearances from John Hurt (I, Claudius), Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), and Tamsin Greig (Riot Women, Friday Night Dinner).
Reading: The Housekeeper of Worthley Hall by Beverley Bowry - Set in 1800s Suffolk, this book follows a young woman who finds herself in a rough spot until she accepts a position at Worthley Hall - and once there, she’s drawn into the secrets and scandals of the family. I’m not sure it’s my kind of book (I lean more towards mysteries), but if you like historical fiction with a lot going on, it may be exactly what you’re looking for.

On BritBox, new episodes of Escape to the Country continue at a rate of four new episodes every Friday through September 25th. Today, the classic 1984 production of A Woman of Substance will be added to the platform. On the 1st, season 46 of Antiques Roadshow premieres (binge premiere), and on the 5th, season 2 of The Hardacres premieres (BritBox Premier members can watch it now).
On Acorn TV, August 3rd brings us new episodes of Summertide and The Ridge. Also on August 3rd, we’ll see the return of The Chelsea Detective (for season 4).
On PBS Masterpiece, this Sunday brings the final episode of Grantchester (though PBS Passport members have been able to watch the whole thing for a while).
On Netflix, July 30th brings The Bombing of Pan Am 103, a historical thriller about the terrorist attack that led to an explosion over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988.
On Apple TV+, new episodes of season 5 of Trying continue to drop weekly until August 26th.
On BBC Select (+ BritBox Premier), the 30th brings season 2 of Murder 24/7 and Secrets of the Human Body. On August 2nd, they’ll add Europe on the Edge with Katya Adler.
