What we’re…
Watching: Marley’s Ghosts - Sadly, this one’s no longer included with any streaming services, but you can buy the whole first season for $4.99 on some rental platforms if you don’t mind standard definition (high def is a few dollars more at time of writing). The light comedy begins when Sarah Alexander (Coupling) realizes she can see a trio of ghosts comprised of a vicar (Jo Joyner, Shakespeare & Hathaway), her ex husband (John Hannah, McCallum), and her lover (Nicholas Burns, Benidorm).
Reading: The Haunted Hotel by Wilkie Collins - This one’s older, of course, so you can either grab it free on Project Gutenberg or pick it up pretty cheaply on sites like Amazon/BN. The Gothic mystery follows a newly married woman who begins to suspect that her husband’s first wife met a sinister end at a Venetian hotel, where secrets from the past refuse to stay buried. It’s not his most famous work, but it’s still an enjoyable (and quick) read.
And a bonus: My dad (who often helps moderate the BritishTV.com Facebook group) recently put together a vulture hippie coloring book to sell at the vulture festival he and my mom attend each year in Makanda, IL. Vultures are some of nature’s greatest recyclers, so it’s not hard to imagine them as hippies - and this coloring book shows them going to festivals, riding in VW minibuses, soaking in hot springs, and just hanging out with friends doing hippie things. If you or someone you know would like that, definitely check it out HERE.
THIS WEEK IN BRITISH TV
On BritBox, new episodes of season 2 of Ludwig continue on Tuesdays, and new episodes of Celebrity Escape to the Country continue on Fridays. On the 22nd, they added season 3 of Time (new episodes weekly, 3 in total). On the 26th, they added season 19 of Would I Lie to You? On November 2nd, they’ll add seasons 3-6 of the much-loved sitcom Friday Night Dinner.
On Acorn TV, new episodes of the Graham Norton Show continue on Thursdays, and Mondays bring new episodes of This is Not a Murder Mystery and The Red King. On the 26th, they added the 2023 crime drama Wolf, along with the true crime documentary The Hunt for the Chameleon Killer. No new shows premiere on the 2nd (just the continuation of the ones mentioned above).
PBS Passport and PBS Masterpiece, the 18th brought season 2 of The Gold (weekly), season 5 of Professor T (binge), and season 2 of Maigret (weekly).
On Apple TV+, new episodes of Small Prophets continue weekly on Tuesdays.
On AMC+, new episodes of Yaga on October 23rd continue on Fridays. It’s Canadian, but it’s a mystery-thriller set in a small coastal town where a PI arrives to investigate the disappearance of a young heir - so it’s seasonally appropriate (and we know many of our readers love the occasional Canadian show).
On Amazon Prime Video, October 23rd brought the premiere of the Last One Laughing UK Halloween Special (which continues through October 30th).
On BBC Select (+ BritBox Premier), the 22nd brought Murder in Concrete and The Castle: Rebuilding History. On the 29th, they added Wonderland: Secrets of the Spymasters & Spies, Einstein & Hawking: Masters of Our Universe, and Stolen Babies: Britain’s Adoption Scandal.
