This week marked 9 years since the premiere of The Durrells (aka The Durrells in Corfu). Based on naturalist Gerald Durrell’s memoir trilogy about his family’s years on a Greek island, the series stars Keeley Hawes as widowed mum Louisa Durrell.
If you haven’t watched it, it’s the sort of high-quality, light period drama that would appeal to fans of shows like All Creatures Great & Small, Downton Abbey, Mr. Selfridge, or Call the Midwife.
And of course, if you loved the show but you haven’t seen either of these productions, we strongly recommend them:
What the Durrells Did Next: Keeley Hawes hosts this special about what happened to the Durrell family after they left Corfu.
My Family & Other Animals - This 2005 production sees Imelda Staunton (The Crown) leading the Durrell family as they leave England and head for Corfu. Matthew Goode (A Discovery of Witches) plays Larry, Russell Tovey (The Sister) plays Leslie, and you’ll also spot Jason Watkins (MacDonald & Dodds) in the role of Durant.
